Sonographers play an essential role in the diagnostic journey of patients, providing vital information to radiologists while maintaining high standards of patient care. In addition to this clinical role, sonographers also contribute to the profession through clinical teaching, or preceptorship. In this highly user-dependent field, the practical knowledge and experience of practicing sonographers must be passed on to the next generation through clinical practicum.

Education is the responsibility of every sonographer. Whether directly serving as a preceptor or supporting colleagues who are teaching students, each member of the profession plays a role in preparing future sonographers. This responsibility has become increasingly important as healthcare systems across Canada face ongoing sonographer shortages. Without the participation of practicing sonographers in clinical education, there would be no graduates entering the workforce to support the growing needs of departments and patients.

Although most sonographers do not have formal training in education, the knowledge and experience you bring to the clinical environment are invaluable. This course is designed to bridge that gap by providing practical guidance and a framework for working with students and educational institutions to support effective clinical learning within the diagnostic imaging environment.
